Every aspect of my life is intertwined with technology. My role as a mother requires knowing what to encourage my child to learn, as well as what to shield him from until he is older. Providing for our family is dependent on our online business. As a student, life without it would be daunting. Something as simple as writing out a shopping list demands it. In general, it enhances life, providing access to ideas, connection to far-flung, like-minded people, and a new perspective on the world. At times, though, it goes too far, making life events impersonal, and callous. Family tragedies are facebook newsfeed fodder, and every crisis is simultaneously reduced to trivia and overinflated to apocalyptic proportions. Most of all, it heightens the noise compared to the signal. Even just sitting and reading that primitive technology known as a book, isn’t just reading a book anymore.
